A contemporary nocturne by Jeffrey Hoover, Into the Night describes the shift of light to darkness late in the evening. Set in a three-part form, the music possesses a broad, lyrical melody and significant melodic and harmonic chromaticism.
The Light of copper, warm and brilliant,
becomes dull as old bronze,
fading into the deepest violet.
The resonant sound of fragrant wood rings clear.
Still warm, I rise and move quietly into the night.
