September

September has always been a month of change and transition – a time when nature embraces both summer and fall, and life unfolds in new ways for individuals and society. The music of September, by Jeffrey Hoover, is set in two related and contrasting sections: music of thoughtful reflection and music of engaging the present. The sound and music of September posses an autumnal quality spanning the psychological and emotional gap between the sound of memories and the music of now. The painting which represents this music may be read from left to right.

Séance – И.С.

It is said that when Igor Stravinsky – composer of the 20th century monumental work The Rite of Spring – was asked what he thought of electronic music concerts, he replied saying they were a bit like a séance, with disembodied voices and sounds that could not be explained. Séance – И.С. for soloist, fixed electroacoustic music, and painting, is a representation of what a séance might be like, complete with an otherworldly manifestation of Stravinsky. The pre-recorded music and painting were both created by Jeffrey Hoover.

First Portrait of Carlos

First Portrait of Carlos by Jeffrey Hoover is for soloist (trumpet/flugelhorn or soprano saxophone are recommended), electroacoustic music, and painting (all created by the composer/artist). It is a work of contrasts, representing living life within nature and living life within an urban environment. An exotic work tracing two aspects of life for Carlos, the work presents sculptural characteristics of natural sounds, synthetic textures, and contrasting styles and musical ideas form the substance of the music. The acoustical and musical aspects of the work are parallel to the visual elements of the painting.
